Over six decades ago, two brothers, Albert and Morris Kaplan, founded an independent surplus company that still bears their name to this day. Working out of a small Philadelphia location seven days a week, the brothers, through hard work and common-sense marketing, were able to supply local welding and fire protection distributors with compressed gas cylinders and related equipment.
In 1959, A-M Fire Equipment Company was founded. Upon acquiring UL approval, the company was one of the first distributors in this area to service the fire and safety distributors with their requirements for soda acid and CO 2 fire extinguishers.
Through the growth of A-M Fire Equipment, Kaplan Industries, Inc. was formed, focusing on supplying their established customer base with an expanded line of new and reconditioned steel compressed gas cylinders. Due to demand, Kaplan Industries, Inc. broadened its product line with the addition of reconditioned tube trailers, related cryogenic plants, and equipment. This was accomplished through hands-on experience, hard work, and dedication. By 1969, due to the increase in business, this once modest operation had outgrown its small location in Philadelphia. Morris Kaplan set his sights on a larger facility located just across the river in a busy industrial section of Maple Shade, New Jersey.
By the mid-1980s, two of Morris’ children, Dean and Rita, had become vital members of the company. Dean began at an entry-level position and through earnest dedication propelled himself to the position of President by his late twenties. Rita first began as a Customer Service Representative and within five years, through a sincere desire to succeed, achieved the position of Vice President. As the company continued to grow it became crucial to move to a new location with more space to enable future growth. In 2011 having purchased the Midwest Cylinder company in Harrison Ohio, the Kaplan siblings decided to expand their grounds and moved to a 16-acre facility in Harrison, Ohio which is now Kaplan Industries national headquarters.
In July of 2023 Kaplan Industries made the decision to combine with our sister company, Midwest Cylinder. Now, Midwest Cylinder is a division of Kaplan Industries. This official merger will create an even better organization to serve our customers.
In an ever-changing world Kaplan Industries, Inc. has dedicated itself to the old-fashioned values of workmanship and service, committed to meeting customer’s needs efficiently, accurately, and safely.
